Qigong : A daily connection
About 5 Valley Chi
Why I Teach Qigong
I have a mission to bring as much awareness as possible to as many people as I can.
I want to encourage people to pause, check in with themselves and notice what they are feeling in the moment — to become more aware of what is happening within them, rather than simply moving through life on autopilot.
Through Qigong, I want to offer simple practices that help develop awareness of the body, emotions and spirit.
By bringing breath, movement and attention together, we can begin to create a more meaningful connection between all the body's systems, and each other — supporting a greater sense of harmony, balance and wellbeing.
Ultimately, it's about helping you help yourself.
My Approach
I want you to feel your body and breath combining with your movement.
The emphasis is on breath, movement and awareness. Rather than telling you what you should feel, I want to help you learn to listen to your own body and discover what is happening for yourself.
There is no right or wrong way to experience the practice. The more you become aware, the more naturally you can begin to respond to what your body is telling you.
The Qigong forms provide a framework — but your awareness is what brings them to life.
It's not about getting the movement perfect. It's about becoming more aware, and allowing your movement to respond.
Neigong & Qigong
My teaching is rooted in Neigong — internal cultivation.
For me, the real magic begins when the internal and external movement start to synchronise — when the movement you can see connects with what you can feel happening within.
Within Daoist traditions, we can understand ourselves as having different layers or bodies, including the energetic body. As awareness deepens, we can begin to sense these layers, follow the connections between them and allow what is held within us to release and move.
That exploration feels joyous and enlivening to me.
My experience and understanding of Neigong helps me bring something of this internal alchemy into the Qigong I teach. The external forms become more than shapes to copy — they become a way of exploring your own body, breath, awareness and energy from within.
The practice is yours to discover.
Helping You Help Yourself
I see myself as a messenger rather than someone who is here to fix you.
My role is to share and teach simple practices that you can explore for yourself — giving you the opportunity to develop your own awareness and discover what works for you.
I'm not here to tell you what you should feel or what your body should be doing.
I'll give you the practices, the guidance and the space to explore them.
The more you practise, the more you can begin to listen to your own body, recognise what is happening within you and respond from that awareness.
To me, this is you, looking after yourself.
Qigong in Everyday Life
Qigong doesn't have to be an hour-long class or something mystical. A few minutes of breathing, movement and attention can become part of ordinary life.
By regularly returning to awareness, we can become more familiar with the whole of ourselves — noticing how our different systems, sensations and emotions are connected, and giving the body space to find its own balance.
For me, this is part of what makes Qigong so valuable: an Eastern philosophy and practice brought into everyday Western life.
It doesn't need to be complicated. It can simply become something you do — a few minutes to breathe, move, notice and reconnect.
Let's Do Qigong Together
I want to give you the greatest opportunity I can to practise, explore and learn Qigong within a framework developed through many years of my own practice and teaching.
I've brought together the practices, understanding and experience that have been meaningful to me, and I'm offering them here so that we can explore them together.
You don't have to take my word for it. Practise, notice and discover what happens for yourself.
This is my invitation to work together — me sharing what I have learnt, and you developing your own experience.
Helping you help yourself.
Let's do Qigong together.
Meet Perry
I have been actively teaching Qigong for 7 years now. I live, and teach, in Stroud, Gloucestershire, UK in the Cotswolds. This is the heart of the five valleys. I have built my home here with my family since 2008. I started practising Qigong in 2001. What started as a simple exercise program to correct posture, has developed into a way of life. I have adopted many Daoist principles to help me in my daily life. Physically, energetically, mentally and emotionally, I feel I have found a whole new way of living through my daily practice of Qigong.
I love watching others benefit from the work they put into their daily practice. It’s hard to maintain good daily practice so it is only right to get something back. The hardest thing is getting started, and finding the time, and that is where I want to help. Having taught hundreds of hours of live classes to hundreds of different body types, the way the material is delivered drastically affects how it’s received, and the outcome.
I taught skiing and snowboarding in a previous version of myself and I believe that a gentle nurturing and relaxed approach is how to get positive results. There is no wrong way to learn. Qigong is based on your internal perception of what you feel and that is as unique to you as we are as individuals, but the framework which supports our learning is the same for us all. Technical forms can themselves become the cage which we seek to break free from. I endeavour to create a framework to support your journey without confining you.
Testomonials
I started Qi Gong with Perry at his suggestion that it may help with sports performance, I compete in Mounted / Horseback Archery.
Perry quickly understood the dynamics of HBA and we worked through a 6 week programme of Qi Gong exercises.
I immediately noticed an improvement in accuracy when shooting from the ground. Over the following weeks I noticed improvements in balance on the horse and rhythm whilst shooting at speed. At a recent competition I scored personal best scores in 2 out of 3 disciplines.
Further benefits have included improved general postural awareness, body comfort- less aches / pains and increased mental resilience.
Perry’s informal and easy manner make the Qi Gong training sessions enjoyable and interesting. Definitely something I will carry on.
Nick White : Osteopath
Qigong has been a hugely important part of my recovery from Chronic Fatigue I experienced after contracting Lyme's disease. It helped restore energy to both my body and mind. This wouldn't have been possible without Perry's calm and insightful teaching.
Chris Barwell : Film Editor
Having trained with Perry since 2005, he has an expertise in understanding Qi, the exercises and internal fluid flow. He has a relaxed, yet dedicated approach, which gives him an adept ability to help others.
